WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Twenty six days until the start of the summer vacation season.  You have a little bit of time to start booking your trips for the long weekend without busting the bank at the airport.  For example, that flight to Miami could be a touch cheaper than last year.

Travelocity reports that the average domestic round trip flight, between May 23 and 28, is about $341.  That price is down only two percent from last year. The difference works out to be about $6.

So here are some ways to stretch that vacation budget:

Timing makes a big difference. Prices tend to go up $10 to $25 each week, leading up to Memorial day.  If you must wait until the week before you travel experts recommend taking advantage of last minute deals or bundle your flight and hotel together.

The days of the week you travel can make a huge difference too. Leaving Tuesday or Wednesday, instead of Thursday or Friday, could lower your ticket by 15%.

If you are still figuring out where to go,  the price of flights to Chicago's has dropped by 3% compared to last year.

Here's some really good news: airfare in the DC region is down 6 percent on average.
