(WUSA9) -- Mother Nature didn't get the message that today was the first day of Spring Break for a lot of families in the DC Metro area.

This time of year, the average high temperature is around 60 degrees in DC. But the day started with a late season snowfall, blanketing the entire area. This kind of weather was not on the agenda for a lot of people's Spring Break plans.

Most of the snow melted pretty quickly downtown and around the monuments. By the afternoon, light rain was falling on the Jefferson Memorial. The cold and dreary weather kept the crowds at bay, but some intrepid souls still got out there to see the sights and take pictures.

Any tourists who were hoping to see the cherry blossoms this week were sorely disappointed; those buds aren't expected to open until after Easter.

But there is good news for us locals. The snow didn't do any damage to the quality or quantity of the blossoms, so we can still expect a full, beautiful display next week.
