WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Metro advised customers to expect abnormally long delays (up to 40 minutes) on the Red Line on Wednesday morning, thanks to a switch problem at Judiciary Square.

Crews worked to replace a piece of rail at the switch point and were clearing the platform around 8:30 a.m. While they were working Red Line trains were single tracking, which caused delays and long lines of people.

Our photographer snapped photos of a big crowd that had formed at Metro Center around 8 a.m. (see above).

Shortly after 10:05 a.m., Metro sent out an alert announcing that normal service had resumed and "residual delays" had cleared on the Red Line.
