WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  Dr. Allen L. Sessoms, president of the University of the District of Columbia, has been fired, according to a statement by UDC.

The university's Board of Trustees made the announcement of the termination of Sessoms' contract late Wednesday night.

Sessoms became university president in September 2008. Previously he had been president at Delaware State University and Queens College of New York City.

A temporary replacement for Sessoms will be named within 48 hours, according to the statement, which thanked Sessoms "for his work in guiding the University over the past four years...But as we grapple with the challenges of reducing staff and programs, continuing to improve our physical plant and attracting new students, the Board has decided to go in a different direction."

The Board statement indicates it has also begun interviewing candidates to serve as Interim President, who will be chosen by mid-January, then serve approximately six to 18 months during a national search for a permanent replacement.
