WASHINGTON (WUSA) - A D.C. man plead guilty to first-degree murder while armed for killing his 13-year-old daughter and wounding to others on Oct. 31, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. said.

Robert Carter, 41, at the time of the murder was not living with his then ex-girlfriend and the family, Machen informed in a press release. According to court evidence, Carter was alone at the family's home located on the 500 block of Madison Street NW for several hours on Oct. 29, 2010. That afternoon, he went to the store to purchase a Halloween mask and a pair of work gloves, returned to the house, and took his daughter, Angel Morse, to the basement where he shot her in the head, the press release stated.

Carter began holding family and acquaintances against their will that afternoon as they returned home, including a six and 10-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, the press release stated.

"At one point, Carter told the 16-year-old that Angel was in the basement and that he had killed her," according to the release.

Carter then went to the door when his ex-girlfriend returned home, opened it, and pointed a gun at her. Right before Carter was able to fire; the 10-year-old boy lunged at Carter's arm. He fired several times hitting his ex-girlfriend in the stomach and the 10-year-old boy in the leg. Carter continued firing the gun a several times, then stole a friend's car and fled the scene, the press release stated.

The release stated that Carter abandoned his friend's car and carjacked a MetroAccess sedan, with an 84-year-old passenger inside who was later released unharmed. DC police chased Carter into Prince George's County until he crashed into a building in Capitol Heights. Carter has been in custody ever since and is scheduled to go to trial next month.

Today, Carter plead guilty to two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. He faces up to 60 years in prison for the murder charge, with a mandatory minimum of 30 years. He also faces up to 30 years in prison on each count of assault with intent to kill while armed, the release stated.
