POTOMAC, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police have identified a child who was struck by her mom's car in a driveway on Sunday night.
According to police, 7-year-old Xitong Kong remains in critical condition after suffering life-threatening injuries in the incident.
Police say 41-year-old Wenhua Song was backing out of her driveway in the 9900 block of Potomac Manors Drive at 9:15 p.m. when she unknowingly struck her 7-year-old daughter. They say Wenhua Song was on her way to the grocery store.
Police tell us that officers went to a home in the same block at approximately 9:36 p.m. for an alarm call and a person told them he had seen someone lying in the Song driveway and called 911. When officers went to the driveway, they saw the unresponsive child and Wenhua Song, who had returned home after realizing she had forgotten something.
Police tell us the alarm call was unrelated to the collision.
At this point in the investigation, police believe that the 7-year-old may have wanted to go with her mother to the store and gone towards the car, which is when she was struck by the vehice.
An accident reconstruction team responded to the scene to investigate.
