SALISBURY, Md. (DelmarvaNow.com) -- A young man shot and killed another man, wounded a female Salisbury University student and then fatally turned the gun on himself in an Onley Road residence Tuesday evening, authorities said.
Police said they are still trying to piece together the details of what they believe to be an incident of domestic violence. At least one other person was in the home being questioned about what had occurred, police said.
No names of the victims have been made public.
The wounded woman is receiving medical treatment in the Shock Trauma unit of Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said in an 8:30 p.m. news conference outside the crime scene.
The shootings occurred at about 6 p.m., authorities said.
The shooter was found dead inside the white ranch house with maroon shutters located on the 100 block of Onley Road. The male he shot was transported to PRMC and pronounced dead there, Lewis said.
The two deceased people are both young adults but are not thought to be Salisbury University students, the sheriff said.
"We firmly believe that the shooter is deceased," Lewis said, calling the incident "kind of unprecedented" for the city. He would not discuss whether or not the shooter was someone known to police.
The violent incident proved stunning for students in only the second week of classes at Salisbury University. Young adults formed crowds around police tape surrounding the home on Onley Road, an area in which many college students live.
University officials used alerts to keep students informed during the evening.
"The investigation thus far reveals that no continuing threat exists to the campus community," one Salisbury University alert to students at midevening stated. "Authorities still ask that the Onley Road area be avoided as the investigation continues."
