Patrick Sibley, George Mason volleyball player, dead after hit by Metro train

BALLSTON, Va. (WUSA9) - A 21-year-old man from Massachusetts has died after being hit by an inbound train.

He has been identified as Patrick Sibley, a member of the men's volleyball team at George Mason University, officials said. 

According to a WMATA spokesperson, the incident happened shortly before 2:00 a.m. Sunday on an above ground track along Highway 66 between East Falls Church and Ballston.

"The Mason community is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Patrick Sibley," said the university's Athletic Director Tom O'Connor. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends, teammates, and all who are affected by this tragedy." 

There were eight passengers riding at the time. The man died on the scene.
