ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police are investigating why a 6-year-old boy was left in a hot car while at the "Capital Kids Preschool and Learning Center" in Alexandria on Wednesday.

Marqui Dawkins was on his way back to the center from a field trip when he fell asleep, lying down, in the back of a van run by Capital Kids.  He woke up nearly an hour later all alone in a van that was so hot he could barely breathe.

"I couldn't breathe out of my nose," said Marqui, who exited the van and then walked over to the daycare's entrance.  His older sister, who also attends Capital Kids and was standing by the front door said, "He was all hot and sweaty and stuff."

Marqui's mother, Cassaundra Johnson, says the daycare's director called her and said, " I made a mistake, I left him in a van."

Johnson is also an employee at Capital Kids, but she was off that day. She claims the daycare's director tried to "settle this internally."

But Johnson went straight to Fairfax County Police.

"I'm furious and I don't want it to happen to no other child," said Johnson.  "I have no sympathy when it comes to my child, any of my children, or anyone else's child."

The daycare's owner declined to comment on camera, but she did say, "I am aware of the situation and everything is being handled to my standard."

Johnson says the exact same thing happened to the child of another employee about a year ago. That mother did not go to police, but Johnson did. Fairfax County Police say they have received Johnson's report and are investigating the incident.
