GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Thursday, we received part of the 911 call a man made after a car crashed into a Gaithersburg Sam's Club. Listen to the audio, accompanied by our chopper and ground crew photos, in the video above.
Tuesday, the 77-year-old-driver slammed into the food court at the box store and hit several people, including a man who had to have his leg amputated. Sheila Orellana was hit and barely got her 3-year-old and one-year-old children out of the way in time.
"I went flying up in the air. I don't remember how my children got out of the way. I just remember pushing them," Sheila Orellana told WUSA 9's Surae Chinn.
Sheila and her children had just left the food court of Sam's Club when the crash happened. That decision could have very well saved their lives. "The table where we were sitting was gone," she recalls.
Montgomery County Police say the driver hit Shiela, then the store, and then two customers inside the store with his car.
Witnesses say the driver seemed to have lost his patience, blowing his horn, while sitting at a stop sign in the parking lot. Police say there is no indication that he was suffering from any medical condition.
