CHURCHTON, Md. (WUSA9/AP) -- Tuesday, crews found the body of a 20-year-old man who disappeared after jumping off a pier to grab a hat near Churchton on Monday.

Maryland Natural Resources Police told the Associated Press that the man disappeared while retrieving a friend's hat from the Chesapeake Bay on Monday afternoon.

Monday boat crews and a dive team were unsuccessful in their search but responded to the area again on Tuesday morning. Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Albert said the body of Thomas Brown of Churchton was found not far from the spot where he was last seen. Brown's body was spotted about 1,500 feet from the pier.

Albert says Brown was with a group of friends at a pier in the Franklin Manor community on Monday afternoon when wind blew a woman's hat into the water. He says Brown went into the water to retrieve the hat, but didn't resurface.
