LANDOVER, Md. (WUSA9) -- Three teens were able to escape potentially deadly flames after their car collided with a tractor trailer in Landover late Tuesday night.

Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department, says the crash occurred in the 8400 block of Ardwick-Ardmore Road just before midnight.

According to Brady, sedan the teenagers were in struck the 18-wheeler so hard it became partially wedged underneath the trailer. Although all three victims suffered serious injuries, they were able to get out of the sedan before the two vehicles burst into flames. The driver of the big rig also escaped and was unharmed.

Brady says the tractor trailer was hauling mattress-making materials, which fed a fire that took approximately 20 minutes to bring under control.

Two of the injured teens were taken to a local trauma center by paramedics. Another teen had to be flown to a specialty trauma center in Baltimore for treatment of a spine injury. All three victims are expected to survive.

Prince George's County Police are investigating the incident.
