BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA9) -- The year was 1993 and Lynette Fitzgerald was doing anything but playing golf. Fast forward to today, she now lives in Reston, Virginia and everything's changed.

"I'm addicted," said Lynette Fitzgerald, smiling.

She has had an off-again, on-again relationship with the game of golf. The off was 16 years!

"I thought it was the silliest game," she said.

The on-again part of the equation ensued about four years ago.

"Out of boredom I figured why not go to the driving range and hit some golf balls."

Did she ever, Fitzgerald discovered she had game.

"Now I'm down to an 11,12, or 13 handicap."

And no surprise, the girl with a military background (Air Force) went all in. Fitzgerald, with the support of her husband, quit her job as a software engineer and dedicated her life to her newfound love.

"It was very scary."

In May she entered Mizuno's game improvement contest, a program designed to allow "average Janes" to live out their dreams of being treated like a pro. Of the more than 6,000 essays submitted, Fitzgerald was selected.

"I get the call from [them] and I'm doing my happy dance in my car seat," she said laughing.

Happy dance, happy girl. From Reston, Virginia to Atlanta, that's where she's headed to play in Mizuno's inaugural JPX Invitational, a tour level experience for amateurs.

"I see a pro-am, galleries, I'm not sure what will happen but that's what I see in my head," said Fitzgerald laughing.

She once hated the game, but now?

"I am fabulous and getting better," she said with a huge smile.

And she's certainly not camera-shy.
