(WUSA9) -- A reminder to all drivers in Virginia: starting Monday, July 1, texting and driving in the Commonwealth will be against the law and police officers will be able to pull you over for it.

If you are caught texting, the first violation will cost you $125. If you are caught again, you will have to pay $250.

Texting will be a primary offense, meaning officers don't need another reason to stop you if they see you texting.

Note: the new law won't apply to drivers of emergency vehicles, stopped vehicles, factory-installed GPS devices, or the use of handheld devices during an emergency.
