GAMBRILLS, Md. (WUSA) -- Maryland State Police have charged the suspect of a fatal shooting on Interstate 97 after an alleged road rage incident on Saturday night.

Police say 40-year-old Joseph Walker, a sworn officer with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey, was charged with second degree murder and manslaughter. He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.

According to authorities, Joseph Harvey, Jr., 36 2000 block of Smith Avenue in Halethorpe, Md., was behind the wheel of a green Honda Accord. Suspect Joseph Walker, was driving a gold Kia minivan on the northbound lane near Route 3 in Anne Arundel County.

After the alleged road rage, both parked on a shoulder of northbound Route 3 to exit I-97 around 8:30 p.m. Preliminary investigation shows Harvey and a passenger got out of the car and approached Walker's minivan, about 100 feet away.

Walker got out of his car and allegedly announced he was a police officer, as Harvey became aggressive. Police say Walker then took out a .45 glock and shot in the direction of the two men, injuring Harvey. He was pronounced dead at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Walker was also taken to the hospital after complaining of chest pains and remained in police custody, authorities said.
