GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WUSA) - Two children were seriously hurt in a police-involved accident.
A marked Howard County Police Dodge Charger collided with a car carrying eleven-year-old and four-year-old girls, both who ended up in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police say it appears Officer Symchay Kon Bendu was driving on duty in an unfamiliar area in Anne Arundel County when he made an illegal u-turn off Route 100 west directly into the path of a Honda Civic traveling on Route 10 south.
Initial investigation shows driver error, not alcohol or drugs, was a factor in the crash.
Bendu is a four-year veteran of the Howard PD. The department will also conduct an internal investigation. The chief released a statement saying:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the two children who were seriously injured in a collision today involving a Howard County police officer in Anne Arundel County. As a parent, my heart goes out to their parents and family."
