WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- One mom has an extra feeling of pride on this Mother's day.

Not only is she celebrating her daughter's graduation at American University on Sunday, but she, herself received a Masters degree the day before.

"We've been on this journey together."

Fifty-five-year-old Karen Parker Thompson and her 21-year-old daughter Ariell have been inseparable in life. So it is no surprise they would share the stage on Mother's day weekend for each to receive their diploma.

"I'm excited, my heart is beating in my stomach."

Thompson is like any parent anticipating their child walking across that stage, but her pride is through the roof because Thompson herself received her Masters of Science in organizational development on Saturday on campus.

"When I found out we would graduate at the same time, it was awesome!"

Thompson screamed out as Ariell in cap and gown, received her Business degree.

Mother and daughter have spent the last two years on campus, motivating each other, studying and meeting up at the library, not always sure they'd see this day together.

Thompson was laid off from Alexandria City Public Schools two years ago, it was then she decided to reinvent herself.

"We did it. I know I had to keep going because I wanted to graduate with her."

Ariell, "I'm glad I got to share this moment with my mom."

Ariell hopes to become a business analyst, her mother wants to use her Masters degree in education, but for the time being they're busy celebrating."

"Pretty much the best Mother's Day ever."
