MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- Opposition is mounting to VDOT's plan to build the Tri-County Parkway which is also called the Bi-County Parkway.

The parkway would be built along the edge of the national Manassas Battlefield in Prince William and Loudoun County. And route 29 and 234 inside the battlefield would be closed to commuter traffic.

Delegate Tim Hugo organized a news conference on Monday with a number of elected officials. They say that the closure would send hundreds of thousands of cars to already gridlocked interstate 66 every day.

Opponents also say the parkway would destroy rural crescent which is land that has been designated as off limits to developers.

The group says the traffic needs are for east to west not north to south which would be the parkway's route from Dulles Airport south.

One property owner who would lose part of his land to the parkway says he heard VDOT's deputy secretary say the need for the parkway is to help cargo traffic have better access to Dulles Airport and that commuters were secondary.
