Officer Brian Johnson Killed In Car Crash Committed Suicide

PASADENA, Md. (WUSA9) -- A medical examiner says a 9-year veteran of the Bladensburg Police Department who died in a car accident committed suicide. 

Originally it was believed that the officer had suffered a medical emergency but The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled the cause of Officer Brian Johnson's death as a gunshot wound to the upper body. 

The Mayor of the Town of Bladensburg, Walter L. James Jr., released a statement of Monday that reads in part:

"...He will be truly missed by us all. Officer Brian Johnson served honorably and with passion for the community he loved. The Town of Bladensburg along with our partners will do whatever needs to be done to help the family get through this tragedy. I am asking that the community keep his family in your prayers."

The accident took place on Saturday at about 9 a.m. on Route 100 and Catherine Avenue. 

Johnson's police vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 100 when it suddenly crossed the median and struck another vehicle traveling westbound, according Anne Arundel County Police.

Police said Johnson had significant injuries and was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. The other driver was treated and released at the scene, according to police.

Johnson was off-duty at the time of the crash.
