WASHINGTON (AP) - Newly elected D.C. Councilmember Anita Bonds says she will quit her job with a major city contractor.

Bonds works for Fort Myer Construction Corp. Councilmembers are not barred from having outside employment, even with firms like Fort Myer that do business with the city.

But Bonds said Wednesday that she would "definitely" quit and become a full-time councilmember. She had taken leave from the job while serving on the council on an interim basis. The council post pays $125,000 annually.

Bonds, a Democrat, won a special election on Tuesday over five candidates, carrying 32 percent of the vote. Voter turnout was just under 10 percent. Bonds will serve the remaining 20 months of the term vacated by Phil Mendelson when he was elected council chairman.
