WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- People seemed to be going about their business in the streets of DC but there was one downtown bomb scare that caused a big disruption.

"Stop the car, back up," an officer said to a driver. "You can't driver through here."

It was about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, when an abandoned or carefully placed metal case was left where anyone could see it-- on the sidewalk next to City Hall, The John Wilson Building.

The Mayor and Council have offices here; the city government's protective services police and private security guards sounded the alarm.

Within minutes the federal Homeland Security police were on the scene. With a bomb sniffing dog;

Meanwhile a few blocks away the plaza in front of the White House was still barricaded, it has been this way since a week ago when bombs went off in Boston.

In the White House, President Obama was inside at 2:50 observing a moment of silence at the same time Massachusetts residents paused to remember.

On DC's downtown streets most people seemed to go about their business-. In a nations capitol that knows it could always be the next target.

"I'm not saying that I'm desensitized to it but we keep hearing these things happening," a woman said.

The suspicious package turned out to be just a scare and drill for police. It happens several times a month in the nation's capitol but another good example that if you see something, say something, police said.
