KENT ISLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- A two car crash in Md. has left four best friends dead.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. today on Kent Island, Md. at Cox Neck Road and Jones Road. A Volkswagen sedan and a Ford Focus were barely recognizable as they were loaded on to a flat bed and taken away.

Eighteen-year-old Cory Passagno of Chester, 19-year-old Michael John Ringenbach of Stevensville, 18-year-old Harrison Rhodes Smith of Chester and 19-year-old Tyler Elzey of Chester were all killed, say authorities.

"They all reside in Queen Anne's County here on Kent Island. I believe all 4 of them may have gone to school together at Kent Island High School," said Dale Patrick at the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office.

One of them was a volunteer firefighter with the Kent Island fire department, the same group of rescuers who were first on the scene.

The only survivor was the driver of a Ford Focus. Seventy-three-year-old Eli Dabich Jr., a professor at the Naval Academy, was taken to Shock Trauma, according to police and WJZ.

Special crash reconstruction investigators are working to determine what led up to the deadly wreck, but in the meantime preliminary clues are pointing detectives in one direction.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Volkswagen driver's speed may have been a factor, say sheriff's office authorities.

Kent Island is a small bedroom community out on this part of the Eastern Shore. The news of the horrible wreck spread quickly and immediately debased the community.
