  • James Ernest Wright, 48 is accused of trying to steal from Girl Scouts selling cookies

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (WUSA9) -- Friday morning, WUSA 9 and 94.7 FRESH FM are in front of the Five Guys in the 3200 block of Plaza Way in Waldorf to encourage commuters to stop and buy cookies from a small Girl Scout troop victimized by an attempted robbery Sunday.

Supporters are trying to help the girls reach a goal of $10,000 in cookie sales by a Friday deadline in order to fund a troop trip to Disney World.

Forty-eight-year-old James Ernest Wright of Waldorf has been charged with attempted robbery, theft and disorderly conduct after allegedly trying to make off with Troop 5819's money as the girls sold cookies in front of a Five Guys restaurant in Waldorf Sunday.

Troop leader Shelli Harris was seriously injured when she was pushed to the ground.  The girls were forced to suspend sales short of their goal after the attack.

They haven't given up though and are back at the scene of the crime to finish their sale. Friday morning, Delia Goncalves talked to a few commuters who heard about what happened to the Girl Scouts and stopped to support the troop.

Marisa James told Goncalves, "I came 'cause I watch 9 News Now at 4:25 every morning because I leave the house at 5:30, and I saw you this morning because I was leaving late and I said, 'I'm going to come to support the Girl Scout troop because it's wrong for anybody to try to steal from a...charitable organization. And you know, they want to go to Disney World and I want them to go!"

The troop can be contacted by email at pinkpassion4u@verizon.net.
