WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Dunbar High School will have its Turkey Bowl Championship win revoked, officials announced.

The District of Columbia Public Schools says Dunbar must forfeit its victory of the annual playoff and other regular season football games, following an investigation into one of the team's players. Officials found one of the participating athletes is not a resident of the district.

"It is deeply disappointing to have to revoke this title from Dunbar, but it is even more disappointing that an ineligible player was playing on the team," said DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson in a press release.

DCPS Athletic Director Stephanie Evans added: "When it becomes clear that a school is in violation, we have to enforce the appropriate consequences."

A tip came in last November that the student played in two games, making Dunbar ineligible.  Wilson High School was also disqualified from the Bowl because an investigation revealed the program had an ineligible player.  Dunbar went on to beat Anacostia High School as the DCIAA champion.

Officials say Dunbar has the opportunity to appeal the findings of the violation. The school's principal was notified Saturday.
