OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- A 3-year-old who died after a car ran over him on the 600 block of Audrey Lane on Wednesday has been identified as Dominic Watkins, Jr. of Oxon Hill, according to Prince George's County Police.
Police say when they responded to investigate the report of a pedestrian accident in the 600 block of Audrey Lane on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. they found a three-year-old boy. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, say police.
Police say their preliminary investigation shows that Dominic's father had parked his car in front of an apartment complex and got out to pick up two young children. The engine was still running and another adult family member was in the car, say police. The father was coming back to the car with his two year old daughter in his arms, when 3-year-old Dominic ran to the car to try to greet the family member, according to police. The father then noticed that the car was rolling backwards and dropped his daughter to go run to the car and jump inside.
Police say at some point, Dominic fell out of the car and was run over.
The daughter suffered injuries from the fall and remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, say police. The father was not hurt.
The accident is under investigation, but police say foul play or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the incident.
