BLADENSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- Prince George's County Police are investigating the police-involved fatal shooting of a woman on Friday night, officials say.
According to Bladensburg police, they responded to a call late Friday about disturbance involving woman displaying a knife at an apartment building on the 4200 block of 53rd Avenue.
When police arrived they knocked on the door of 43-year-old Tonya Michelle Buggs' apartment. Preliminary investigation indicate that Buggs opened the door holding a knife above her head, Prince George's Police say.
Three police officers asked her to drop her weapon before shooting at her when she lunged at them with the knife, police say.
Buggs was taken to a local hospital where she died.
The chief of the department says this is the first police-involved shooting since 1978.
Prince George's County is now investigating the fatal incident and say the involved officers have been placed routine administrative leave.
