Police: Pedestrian Tripped In Street Before Car Struck Him

WHITE OAK, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County police officials say that a man who died after being struck at Route 29 and Oak Leaf Drive on Thursday night tripped in the street before the accident.

Police arrived on the scene at 10:30 p.m. Thursday and determined that a Nissan Ultima was traveling southbound on Route 29, approaching the Oak Leaf Drive intersection. Witnesses say the male pedestrian started to cross the southbound lanes from the center median, tripped while crossing the southbound lanes, and was struck by the Nissan. The pedestrian died at the scene, say police. 

Police tell us the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Her identity will be confirmed later today, and the pedestrian's identity will be revealed after his next-of-kin has been notified, say police.

Police continue to investigate the collision and are asking anyone who has information to call the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
