FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA) -- Sunday afternoon, Frederick police say a driver who was stopped after speeding away was eating from a cup holder containing off-white crumbs. They say those crumbs appeared to be crack cocaine.

The incident started at 3:03 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block W. South Street. An officer patrolling an apartment complex parking lot saw a driver sitting a vehicle. According to police, the driver stared at the police vehicle briefly before speeding away on to W. South Street.

The officer followed the car and made a traffic stop "because the vehicle did not stop before entering a public road from a private drive," say police.

As he was talking to the driver, the officer says the driver's body was shaking, he was stuttering and the driver also gave him a credit card instead of his driver's license.

Another officer arrived at the scene for back up. That officer saw the driver open the center console and start eating something small. The officer told him to stop and get out of the vehicle, say police.

Off-white crumbs were spotted in the cup holder in the center console, and police say they appeared to be suspected crack cocaine.

The driver was placed under arrest, and police say they found items of suspected CDS paraphernalia in the vehicle when it was searched incident to arrest.
