WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The green line metro service has been restored between Navy Yard and Southern Ave. after riders were evacuated.

DC Fire says there were smoking insulators outside of the Anacostia Metro Station.

Officials shut down the tracks which stranded two fully loaded in the tunnel.

"After about 30 minutes or so some of the stranded passenger on one of the two trains decided to 'self evacuate' and began walking down the track to an emergency exit," Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel said.

Stessel added that approximately 100 to 150 people left through the emergency exit at about 6:30 p.m. Three customers suffered minor panic attacks.

Passengers were eventually evacuated from the train with assistance from Metro Transit Police.

Full service was restored at 7:20 p.m.
