WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Twenty-three years ago today, D.C. Council Member Marion Barry was arrested at the Vista Hotel. This week, U.S. News says it spoke to the former mayor about his 1990 arrest for crack cocaine over the phone and he made some interesting allegations about the FBI.

Barry, who was D.C. mayor at the time, was videotaped during a sting operation smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room that he was staying in with his then-girlfriend. Unbeknownst to Barry, (former) girlfriend Rasheeda Moore was cooperating with the FBI and she had received crack cocaine from an undercover cop.

Many of those familiar with the case know that Barry would later say about Moore, "The b**** set me up!" but few probably know about this: "The FBI had a mind to entrap me, also the FBI tried to kill me by having some substance that wasn't proven to be crack."

According to U.S. News, Barry made that statement over the phone. He pointed out that it was odd the FBI had an EMT on the scene and that at the lab looking at they substance "they couldn't say what it was." U.S. News reports that Barry believes that it was poison.

Bill Baker oversaw the sting operation. He told U.S. News that he used an emergency medical technician as a precaution and because "The arrest was on or near the celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday and we didn't want to have anything go wrong from a procedural standpoint."

As for the murder allegation, he called the claim "absolutely ridiculous."

U.S. News points out that at Barry's trial, an FBI chemist testified that the rocks were 93 percent pure crack cocaine while one juror told the others that it didn't look like the drug to her.

In the end, Barry spent six months in prison for one charge of cocaine possession stemming from an incident before the sting operation.

Barry was elected to another four-year term as mayor in 1994.
