WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- WUSA*9 has a new look, and it's because we're listening to you, the viewer.

We're introducing the new graphics and color codes on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Noon.

Instead of a bunch of tickers and rundowns, we've streamlined the look with simple color coding on the bottom of your television screen.

"The goal of our new graphics package is to make our newscasts more clear and understandable to the viewer," WUSA9's News Director, Fred D'Ambrosi said.

"It's designed to allow their eyes to naturally go to the most important information first, and then to the secondary information. The look tells you what's on the screen in detail, while telling you what's coming up without distracting from the story on the screen."

There were many complaints by you that the older look was "too busy and too boring."

"We've listened to a lot of viewers and they all tell us that local news looks too busy and manages to be boring at the same time," WUSA9 Marketing Director, Sandra Gehring said.

"We put our heads together with the best and brightest in all of Gannett Broadcasting and developed a completely new approach to our news presentation. It's pretty darn exciting to offer up a visual look that actually makes it easy to understand the important aspects of any story. We think it addresses both "too busy" and "boring" in one fell swoop," Gehring said.

The coding aligns with our sister-newspaper and media giant, USA Today.

So, in case you're not familiar with the colors, here's how they work:

  • BLUE: News
  • YELLOW:  Weather
  • RED: Sports
  • GREEN: Money
  • PURPLE: Lifestyle and Entertainment stories
  • ORANGE:  Tech Stories
  • LIGHT BLUE: Travel
  • GREY Opinion stories
