NEW CARROLLTON, Md. (WUSA) --Prince George's County Police have identified the victims of a fatal apartment fire in New Carrollton as 45-year-old John Michael Abbate and 53-year-old Tanya Winston.
Police are investigating the fire as a double homicide. The suspect, 44-year-old Anthony Andre Allain, was arrested and is being charged with two counts of felony murder and first degree arson.
On Sunday evening, Prince George's County firefighters responded to the 7600 block of Fountainbleau Drive and saw flames shooting out of a three-story garden style apartment.
One adult was found dead inside the apartment where the fire started. The other person jumped about 40 feet from the balcony.
The adult who jumped from the balcony was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead as a result of injuries from the jump.
Police and fire investigators believe the fire is suspicious because of some of the 911 calls they received.
Witnesses say they saw a person, who was later identified as Allain, climbing down from the apartment where the fire started.
About 50 residents will be displaced as a result of the fire damage. The identities of the victims have not been released.
Fire investigators say there is an estimated $200,000 worth of damage.
