BETHESDA (WUSA) --A series of brush fires along I-270, 495, Old Georgetown Road, Rockledge Boulevard, and the 5500 block of Tuckerman Lane in Montgomery County, Md.,  resulted in major traffic delays on I-270 northbound on Tuesday afternoon.

The delays from the fires extended past the Outer Loop's Exit 33, and three lanes of northbound I-270 were blocked near Md. Rt. 187.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused eight separate blazes along about a mile of the shoulder of the I-270 spur. One theory: that a vehicle might have had sparks shooting out of it's exhaust as it drove the route... or that someone threw a cigarette out of their car and the "Venturi" wind from trucks blasting by, spread the blaze up the highway.

Montgomery Fire Rescue Service Chief Richard Bowers says the underbrush is pretty dry, and it doesn't take much to set it ablaze.
