UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- An Upper Marlboro neighborhood was on lock down for 10 and a half hours after a man barricaded himself inside a home in the 11900 block of Berrybrook Terrace in Upper Marlboro.

A SWAT team and negotiator talked the 24-year-old man until he surrendered without incident, but not after putting the area on edge for most of the day on Saturday.

"I don't know what's going on," Kendra Hurley, resident said.

The call came out as a family dispute around 2 a.m. on Saturday. Police arrived and encountered the 24-year-old man with a shotgun. Family members were safely evacuated out of the house.

"Never looked like there was any problems going on there. Never any fighting, never any police there," Eric Hodges, a neighbor said.

At around 12:30 p.m. the man surrendered.

The home's windows are shattered. The family is shaken and neighbors are left wondering what happened and why.

"What little I found out, I found out on twitter. I saw so many police officers that we never felt endangered it felt like it was being handled. As long as we kept inside and didn't get in anyone's way it would be resolved," Hodges said. "It reminds you that this kind of thing can happen in any neighborhood. This is not the kind of neighborhood that you expect this to happen, it's actually a quiet neighborhood. Sometimes these things can happen anywhere."

"We've only been here a couple of months and praying we made the right choice in moving here," Hurley added.

The 24-year-old man is getting a mental evaluation.
