GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County Police are investigating a homicide and possible home invasion at a Gaithersburg apartment complex. They have identified the man who died as 45-year-old Cesar Smith.
Captain Paul Starks, spokesman for the police department, says Montgomery County and Gaithersburg Police officers responded to a report of a shooting at 20 Whetstone Drive around 12:06 a.m. When officers arrived on scene they found the body of Smith inside an apartment at the Whetstone Apartments.
The cause of his death was later determined to be caused by one fatal stab wound.
Preliminary investigations show that Smith was in the apartment with at least another male when several suspects came into the apartment and separated them, police say.
"After a brief amount of time, the suspects were heard arguing with the victim and then left the apartment," Montgomery County police said in a press release.
Shortly after, the suspects left and Smith was found injured inside the apartment.
Investigators are looking for multiple suspects.
At this time it is unclear whether or not anything was taken from the home.
