WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a press conference on Thursday about the beginning of house demolition and the cleanup of the property at 4825 Glenbrook Road N.W. The property is located within the Spring Valley Formerly Used Defense Site.

During the World War I era, the property was part of the American University Experiment Station, where the U.S. government researched and tested chemical agents, equipment and munitions. During two investigations that started in 2000 and 2007, the Corps of Engineers found "materials of concern"  on the property, and next to the house's foundation.

Removing the house will allow engineers to thoroughly investigate near and under the house, and clean up and restore "the property to residential standards," say Army Corp of Engineers officials.

The removal is expected to take two to three weeks. Officials say the debris "will be either recycled or disposed of off-site in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines."
