UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Prince George's County firefighters made a grisly discovery of human remains after extinguishing flames that broke out in an abandoned structure early Wednesday morning.

Mark Brady, spokesman for the Prince George's County Fire Department, says firefighters responded to the 15000 block of Buck Lane in Upper Marlboro after receiving a report of a structure fire around 2:15 a.m. Once on scene fire crews found an abandoned house fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters attacked the blaze from the outside of the structure.

According to Brady, the bulk of the flames were extinguished after approximately 45 minutes, allowing firefighters to enter the remains of the demolished building to wet down the hot spots that remained. As crews treated the smoldering structure a body was found. According to Brady, the body is unidentifiable and an autopsy will be required to discover the identity of the victim and the cause of death.

Officials say that according to evidence at the scene, the home was being used by "homeless, squatters or vagrants." They have not found anything suspicious yet.

Due to fire crews working in close proximity to CSX tracks, all train traffic was stopped. Largo Road (RT 202) was also closed by hose lines laid across the roadway.

The cause of the fire will remain under investigation.
