(WUSA) -- We're wishing a happy birthday on Monday to legendary singer Tina Turner. The performer known for mega-hits such as "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got To Do With It" turns 73 today.
Turner was born in Brownsville, Tennessee, and raised in Nutbush. She started recording songs in her early teens and later married Ike Turner. They created a good number of hits together, but "River Deep, Mountain High" launched her into superstardom. After years of abuse, in the late 1970s, Tina left Ike and started her solo career.
The album "Private Dancer" was released in 1984 and earned Tina four Grammys. Her autobiography "I, Tina" was made into the film "What's Love Got to Do with It," which received Academy Award nominations.
Tina Turner has sold more than 170 million albums and released her final one in 2004. Turner is mostly retired but still performs for some some special events, such as her appearance with Beyonce at the 50th Grammy Awards.
