EAST RIVERDALE, Md. (WUSA) -  A Prince George's County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man Wednesday night at around 7:30 p.m. while serving a protective order, according to a police spokesperson.

Captain Nancy Ridgely of the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office said, "A Deputy Sheriff with the Prince George's County Sheriff's office responded to 6312 63rd Avenue to attempt service on a temporary protective order....while he was in the home, a male subject appeared from the rear of the house displaying a firearm."

That order was meant for a man whom neighbors identify only as Frank. That's when 9 News heard a woman, who neighbors say is Frank's mom, opened the door.

The man inside the home approached the deputy with a gun pointed, according to police. The deputy, described as a tenured veteran, fired at the man. The shot was fatal.

Ridgely says the Deputy Sheriff wasn't hurt, and he's now on temporary administrative duty. The Prince George's County Sheriff's office won't confirm or release the victim's name. They say this matter is under investigation.
