ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) - Police have arrested a Maryland man in connection with two separate carjacking cases on Rockville Pike.

Police arrested Byron Deshane Gova, 27,  of White Plains, Md., and charged him on several counts of auto theft, carjacking, and robbery, as well as using a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Govan was arrested earlier this month, police said, but the information was not immediately released because they  believed he may have been involved in similar crimes in nearby jurisdictions.

On September 27 at approximately 9:57 p.m. in Congressional Plaza in Rockville, a woman's car and property were taken by a black male suspect who implied he had a weapon. After the carjacking, the victim's checks were used at various locations in other jurisdictions. Police obtained video of the suspect.

A second incident took place October 31 at approximately 2 p.m. at 11200 Rockville Pike near White Flint Mall. A couple was forced from their vehicle by a black male suspect who was holding a black handgun. He took their wallets and fled in their vehicle.

Police saw the car on I-495 a short time later, but a brief pursuit ended near Colesville Road and Spring Avenue in downtown Silver Spring. The suspect fled on foot and was not located.

Police compared surveillance footage of that suspect to footage from the September 27 incident, and concluded the suspect was the same person.

Govan is currently being held on bond and is awaiting a late November court date.
