MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA) -- Military brides got to pick and choose their wedding gowns in the national Brides Across America program.

Qualified brides get to take the gowns home at no cost at participating stores.

Jeanette's Bride N 'Tux Boutique in Manassas, Virginia saw a steady stream of excited women trying on dresses on Thursday.

Nicki Anderson's fiance has six months left in his deployment.

She's searching for the one, and after four dresses, she thinks she's found it.
"it's exactly what I wanted, fitted on the top with a dramatic bottom,"she said.

The designer dresses have been donated by companies and other brides. They cost anywhere from $1000 on up.

Air Force Captain Kim French just returned from Afghanistan, her third tour of duty.

"I'm so thankful that somebody has seen the service that a lot of us woman have done, that hasn't been noticed in the past as much as it should, is really cool," French said.

She has six months to prepare for her special day.
She's stepped off the battlefield and can now concentrate on walking down the aisle.

Her mother says it's been a hard fought battle to get where she is.
And it brings tears to her eyes that her Air Force daughter is now on cloud 9.
"The first dress she tried on, I could see those smiles I haven't seen in a long time. That's what brought tears to my eyes to see her happy."

Jeanette's Bride 'N Tux was the only participating store in the region, but the program runs through November 24th across the country. A Norfolk bridal store will hold an event next week.

In order to qualify, brides or their fiances must be serving in the military, either currently deployed or deployed within the last five years to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Libya, Kenya, or Japan. Brides have to show identification and deployment papers.
