TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- Sera Morgan and Cayo Gamber have been together for more than 20 years, sharing a charming home in Takoma Park and a talented 19-year-old daughter.

But they say they have never felt more like a couple than they do today, one day after Maryland voters became the first in the country's history to approve a same-sex marriage referendum.

"It feels like you are legitimate and you are here, you're not an embarrassment," Sera said.

As a result of Tuesday's historic vote, gay couples in Maryland can start getting marriage licenses on January 1, 2013, less than two months away. Cayo and Sera say they plan on being among the first in line for their marriage license on New Year's Day, and then plan on getting married sometime next fall. Right now, they're still in the early stages of planning the big event, but Cayo says she knows one thing for sure: definitely no wedding dress for her.

"Oh, absolutely not, perhaps a tunic with pants," Cayo said with a hearty laugh.
