COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- University of Maryland campus administrators are tracking Hurricane Sandy and Mary Ann Rankin, the University's Senior Vice President and Provost, suggests following these precautions:

*    If you haven't done so already, you can sign up for UMD emergency text alerts by visiting
*    Program the campus emergency phone number, 301-405-3333 or #3333 into your cell phone.  Report any emergencies immediately to University Police.
*    Assemble emergency supplies in your room or home. Consider keeping a three day supply of water and nonperishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries, a corded phone, first aid supplies, cash, etc. on hand.  See the Resident Life emergency preparedness website for more suggestions on emergency supplies.
*    Keep your cell phone and other devices charged prior to severe weather.
*    Listen for campus Early Warning sirens if you are on campus and seek instructions from 1640 AM radio, 88.1 FM radio, Comcast cable channel 76 (Terp TV), or x5-SNOW (or 301-405-7669).
*    If severe weather hits our area, remain indoors and consider moving to the basement or an interior hallway of your building unless instructed by the UMD Department of Public Safety or by residence hall staff to evacuate the building.
*    Save your work frequently on your computer in case of a sudden power outage.
*    Know your roommates' whereabouts and those of as many neighbors as you can.
*    Keep in touch with loved ones to keep them updated on your whereabouts and safety.
*    If the campus loses power and classes are cancelled, updates will be made on the x5-SNOW line,, and on local radio and television stations.
