UPDATE 5:00 P.M.: From Md. Department of Transportation: All lanes have now reopened following an earlier hazardous materials incident on westbound US 50. Drivers should continue to expect delays. Call 1-877-BAYSPAN (229-7726) for the latest traffic conditions throughout the evening. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, Md. (WUSA) -- The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is now open after a HAZMAT incident right before the westbound entrance to the bridge in Queen Anne's County.

HAZMAT has contained the leak and finished all clean-up efforts, however, delays are expected throughout the evening, the Maryland Transportation Authority informed.

It happened at around 3:16 p.m., when the truck started letting out some kind of gas.

At that point, officials had closed the bridge in both directions.

Maryland State Police say the truck started leaking propane, which is when they decided to close the bridge.

An official with the MD State Highway Administration said that a 9,000 gallon propane tank is leaking gas through a valve that somehow became loose or broke.

He says the propane was leaking straight up in the air and that they have to wait until all the gas escapes before they can open the bridge to traffic.
