WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Two women are reaching out to the District's black communities to empower women to take care of their health.

Monday morning, Andrea Roane sat down with newly-diagnosed breast cancer patient Natalie Williams and Carla Williams, Ph.D. from Howard University Cancer Center.

Natalie Williams' mother urged her to get a mammogram before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She chose to have a double prophylactic mastectomy and talks about her decision to speak out about something so personal.

Dr. Carla Williams is the project director of Women of Promise, an aggressive outreach to the same women in Wards 7 & 8 Natalie is trying to speak to about breast cancer. Dr. Williams explained how it works and why it's still a challenge to get women to get a regular mammogram.
