WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Tuna has been known for years to carry measurable amounts of mercury.  A new study suggests the mercury in tuna is even more dangerous for children than once thought.

A report published by the Mercury Policy Project says the amount of mercury in tuna harms brain development in young children.  According to the group, in the past decade the level of concern for mercury in tuna has changed for the worst.

The report, called Tuna Surprise, is the first report to test tuna being sold to schools.  Several recommendations from the report include the following:

-Never serve albcore tuna to children.

-Children under 55 pounds should eat light tuna no more than once per month.

-Children over 55 pounds should eat light tuna more more than twice a month.

-Children who eat tuna at least once per week should be tested for mercury levels in their bloodstream.

-Parents should introduce other types of seafood in place of tuna.

The group is calling on the USDA to phase out subsidies in the school lunch program for tuna.
