STANDISH, Maine (AP) - Maine public health officials say the West Nile virus has been found in a mosquito sample from Standish.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the presence of the virus which was posted on the Standish town website on Thursday.

The monitoring pool in which the disease was detected is a few miles northwest of Gorham, where the virus was confirmed last week. It has also been confirmed in Lebanon.

Standish Town Manager Gordon Billington says there has been no discussion of using pesticides to control the mosquito population.

West Nile can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can cause flu-like symptoms or even death, but many people show no symptoms.
