WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - Several church leaders want a Tuesday Rally at the Wilson Building to serve as a counterpoint to those who are urging D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray to resign in the wake of an unfolding election scandal that has led three City Council members to call upon Gray to quit.

A U.S. Attorney last week revealed part of an investigation into the 2010 mayoral race, whih Gray won, showing an illegal, underground campaign to support Gray's official campaign.

"What we're saying is there is no need to rush to judgement. There is an investigation going on. The city has already been through trauma and drama with the resignation of two city counselors, and it's the role of elected leadership to be sober, reflective, to help unify the city and lead the city in that way, and not continue to spiral into the divisiveness that comes about when people do their own political grandstanding, operate out of their own self-interest.

"The calls for the the mayor's resignation were pre- mature, were personal political aggrandizement. We need to say to folks: simmer down, calm down. We need to have unity, to move the city forward," said Rev. Graylan Hagler, the Senior Pastor at Washington's Plymouth Congressional United Church of Christ in Northeast, and one of the organizers of Tuesday's rally.
