WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  I was 16 when I decided I wanted to be journalist.and I was 17 when the whole idea started looking more than a little scary.

People started warning me the business was really competitive. And I worried, maybe I can't even get a job doing this!! But when I told my pops about my fears, he said something amazing. He said, "You're right. You might not make it. But you have to try."

And then he went even further. If you told me you wanted to make your living playing your bass guitar, he said, then I would say that's what you should try to do. Which was all the more shocking since he'd actually heard me play. "If it doesn't work out," he shrugged,"you'll find something else to do.

Wow. It was, as I think of it no, permission to fail, which in a way is permission to try something hard. A lot of parents love the idea of their kids following their dreams, so long as there's only minimal risk of those dreams falling short.

How ya going to make a living as an actor, or a fashion designer or rapper, they say. My dad said, "Your dreams..your life..and whatever happens...it'll be okay."

A two-minute conversation 35 years ago.  And just one of a million reasons I will always say, "Thanks, Dad. And Happy Fathers Day."
