OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA) -- A fiery early-morning crash on the Maryland side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge has left two dead, and two others injured.

As of 8:00 Saturday morning investigators and clean-up crews were still at the scene of the violent collision, which happened around 2:50 a.m.  According to Corporal Yolanda Stockton, spokeswoman for Maryland State Police, an initial investigation has revealed a 2009 Dodge traveling in the northbound thru lanes of the Woodrow Wilson bridge struck the rear of a 1985 Chevy, causing the Chevy to spin out. The force of the first collision caused the driver of the Dodge to lose control and slam into the back end of a tractor trailer.  Cpl. Stockton says the Dodge became engulfed in flames upon impact.

According to Corporal Stockton, the driver and the front seat passenger of the Dodge were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant in the back seat survived, and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was also transported, but is expected to recover. The driver of the Chevy was not injured.

The thru lanes of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge were closed through the night to allow for the extensive investigation. All lanes reopened around 9:45 Saturday morning.

Investigators are still in the process of identifying the victims.

So far there is no official word on what may have caused the crash, however Cpl. Stockton confirms witnesses reported seeing the Dodge traveling at a high rate of speed on the Virginia side of the bridge.

The investigation is ongoing.
